Waseda enrolls approximately 47,500 students per year and many of the leading positions in Japanese businesses, government, and other organizations are held by Waseda alumni.

The Center for International Education

For over 30 years, Waseda's Center for International Education (CIE) has participated in the consortia exchange of students.  The main function of the Center is the exchange of students and scholars.  As of the 2000 academic year, Waseda University accepted 1,153 international students from 58 countries.  The countries and regions sending the largest number of students are China (382), Korea (339), USA (96) and Taiwan (78).  Currently, Waseda University has over 250 exchange agreements with universities and colleges in 49 countries.

The International College

In April 2004, a new undergraduate college will be established at Waseda University called the International College.  This new college will offer a North American liberal-arts-style curriculum to a student body made up of 2/3 Japanese students and 1/3 International students.  The four-year curriculum is divided into three stages with the first emphasizing foreign language training - Japanese for students from outside of Japan. In the second stage students have the option to study abroad, beginning advanced studies at universities around the world. In the final stage, students focus on the discipline area of their choice, fully utilizing both English and Japanese.  The goal of the Waseda International College is to educate future world leaders the "Waseda way."

In addition, the International College will host all of the traditional study abroad and exchange students who go to Waseda (those who used to study at the International Division).
